Black Lives Matter
On 25th May 2020, a man named George Floyd was arrested by the police in America when he was using a duplicate 20 dollar note in grocery store. The police officer Derek Chauvin arrested George treated him in a very brutal manner. During the arrest, the police officer placed his knee on the neck of George for around 9 minutes due to which he died. The last words of George- " I can't breathe" used as a slogan by protesters. The entire incident happened on a public street.
This incident brought to light the matter of police brutality. A police officer took someone's life for such a petty crime and it isn't that the people who were standing around weren't saying anything. And when this video of George got viral, then the entire world got to witness how the US police treats the citizens there because this is not the first case that has come to light. Several such cases have been reported in the past as well-
✨ Police responded to his 911 call for help. He died. What happened to Tony Timpa. (www.dallasnews.com)
✨ Minneapolis Police use force against black people at 7 times the rate of whites. (www.nytimes.com)
These are the some headlines from the newspapers.
This is the reason why people across the world came out on the streets and on social media as well to protest. There were protests in more than 400 cities across the US. This incident of George served as a kind of trigger for the people who were already irritated with the police brutality in the past. And this was so clearly captured. At some places these protest turned into violent riots, looting as well in some cities of the US.
Now the question arises- HOW ARE THE PROTEST RACIAL..??
George Floyd, who was killed, was actually of African - American, Black race and the police officer who killed him belonged to the White race. So the racial divide between the blacks and the whites also came due to this incident. The people began to complain that the police system in the US is biased. The US police targets the black people more than that to whites. This is the only reason why the Black lives matter organization was the most outspoken in these protests. Black lives matter is a human rights organization that supports racial equality.
Take a look- Innocent black people are 7 times more likely to be convicted wrongfully as compared to innocent white people for murder. So, according to me this data clearly shows us that there is a racial bias in the police system. This type of racism is called systematic racism that is, the kind of racism reflected in our social and political mindset. The biggest reason for this is the history of US. Many years ago, black people were treated as slaves. They were denied even the voting rights. They were treated equally finally in 1960s . This is the reason why the ancestors of the black people today have lived through such terrible conditions. Because they have no carried over wealth.
We would have to acknowledge these biases and also figure out what the root causes of these biases are. If you found this informative and logical then share it, comment below your quires if any..
